Basic Fees

I have set my basic fees near the statistical medians for those charged by professional portrait artists painting original works of archival quality:

Composition

Typical Size

Basic Fee

One-Quarter Length ("Bust")

16 x 20 in.

$2,500

One-Half Length

30 x 40 in.

$5,000

Three-Quarters Length

36 x 60 in.

$7,500

Full Length

40 x 80 in.

$10,000

These basic fees do not include any discounts or surcharges (See below) but do include all materials that go into the finished painting as well as all reasonable expenses for reference photography.

All fees are subject to change without further notice.

Discounts

There is a 20% discount for young people (under 18 years of age).

There is a 20% discount for a single painting with multiple subjects.

There is a 20% discount for subjects portrayed at 50% life-size; a 10% discount for 75% life-size; etc. Note that 100% life-size is the most traditional, undoubtedly because it is the most lifelike, with the greatest "impact".

For an estimate, please contact me or see the Sample Fee Calculation.

Agents, Brokers, Art Dealers, Gallery Owners, Interior Designers, et al.:  Please contact me for a reseller's discount.

Surcharges

There are additional charges for portraits with any animals or highly complex costumes, backgrounds, etc. (Note that fees for portraits of animals alone will vary, as by breed and size — typically, the fee should be comparable to a comparably sized portrait of a person, as in the chart above).

There are additional charges for any travel, lodging, or shipping out of the greater Los Angeles area. A shipper specializing in handling artworks, such as Craters & Freighters®, will typically charge about 5% above my painting fees (relatively more for smaller works) for crating, insuring, and shipping a painting anywhere within the continental U.S.

There are additional charges for any framing. I can recommend a reputable local framer; and if you wish to locate one in your area, you may contact The Professional Picture Framers Association.

Portraits delivered within California are subject to sales tax.

Terms & Conditions

The deposit is negotiable, but ordinarily non-refundable. Please note that for even a nominal deposit, a Gift Certificate is available, as for a "last minute" or surprise gift.

Please check with me for scheduling, which is typically on a first-come, first-served basis. Although every composition is different, it will generally take at least two to four months to complete a painting, if I am free (Fortunately, the slow-drying nature of my painting medium allows me to work on more than one painting at a time).

The balance is due upon completion and only if the client is satisfied with and takes delivery of the final work (I can supply photos for preliminary approval over long distances).

Both the deposit and the balance may be paid in installments, if agreed to in advance.

For complete terms and conditions, please see the Contract.

I always work with each client to accommodate as best I can any special circumstances: I want nothing more than this creative experience to be pleasant and rewarding for all concerned.
