SUBJECT: Thankful for a President of Reason

Dear Family, Friends, & Fellow Americans,

This Thanksgiving, for the first time in years, I am thankful to have a president who doesn’t “shoot from the hip” and then stubbornly “stays the course” even if things go terribly wrong, but instead one who uses his head and doesn’t view “course correction” as weakness. As Pres. Obama recently stated in an interview with U.S. News & World Report (republished in the Washington Post):

Because these are tough questions, you are always dealing to some degree with probabilities. You’re never 100 percent certain that the course of action you’re choosing is going to work. What you can have confidence in is that the probability of it working is higher than the other options available to you. But that still leaves some uncertainty, which I think can be stressful; and that’s part of the reason why it’s so important to be willing to constantly reevaluate decisions based on new information.

Although these are tough times — improving, but far from over yet — and although there will always be missteps along the way — even most of what FDR tried failed; but that only made him, and the nation, work that much harder and better — we can be truly thankful that we have a leader who is wise enough to know that he, like any of us, will not always be right, but who is dedicated to using his excellent powers of reason to the best of his ability, not just act on “gut instinct.” What a refreshing, and necessary, change from the previous, disastrous administration.

For that, and for living in this wonderful country truly blessed with so much — particularly a vibrant, diverse population — Happy Thanksgiving!

Doug
