DEMOCRACY: Government & Politics | November 5, 1998

THE MODERATE MAJORITY IN CALIFORNIA

An Unpublished Letter to Los Angeles Times

I found your statistical "Portrait of the Electorate" to be very illuminating.

Apparently, Democrats convincingly won so many contests throughout the state because overall, the California Democratic Party is more moderate than the California Republican Party: Amongst Democrats, there are about half-again as many moderates as liberals (25% to 16% of the electorate); whereas amongst Republicans, there are half-again as many conservatives as moderates (21% to 14% of the electorate).

Although a fairly liberal Democrat, I volunteered a great deal of my time and effort this year to help moderate candidates; and I urge my conservative Republican counterparts to likewise cooperate with moderate elected officials, for the common good.
