INSECURITY &
INTOLERANCE
An E-Mail to

Response to Reports of Harassment of Non-Christian Air Force
Cadets
Our security forces exist to
address the -- often real, sometimes imagined -- problem of
our collective insecurity. Intolerance exists because of -- usually imagined
-- individual or collective insecurity.
I don't remember the image of either General Washington or
Jesus Christ cowering in insecurity. To the extent that we who
promote tolerance and our own version of national security
project an image of secure, rational self-confidence -- think
FDR or JFK -- we will defuse a lot of the xenophobia and
paranoia in the country.
