Although some viruses that infect animals are covered by a membrane, viruses are not membrane-bound, living cells.  Viruses are basically just protein-coated strands of "nucleic acid" (either DNA or the related RNA) and are probably descended from living cells that lost the ability to reproduce themselves without inserting themselves into the genes of their "host" cells.
